About this calculator

What this calculator does

Projects your retirement savings to your target retirement age using a compound growth model, estimates your monthly income in retirement, calculates your retirement readiness score, and models the South African two-pot retirement system introduced in September 2024 — including the impact of withdrawing from your savings pot before retirement.

How to interpret your results

The retirement readiness score shows how close you are to replacing your current income in retirement. A score above 70 is considered on track. The two-pot section shows the long-term cost of accessing your savings pot early — this is often significantly larger than the amount withdrawn due to lost compound growth.

Assumptions applied

  • Investment returns are assumed to be constant at the rate you enter. Actual returns vary year to year.
  • Inflation is applied at the rate you enter to adjust future projections into today's money.
  • Contributions are assumed to increase with inflation each year.
  • The two-pot system seed capital is 10% of your fund value as at 1 September 2024, capped at R30,000.
  • SASSA old age grant is included as a baseline income floor for qualifying individuals.

What this calculator doesn't account for

  • Does not account for fund-specific fees, which can significantly reduce long-term returns.
  • Does not model the tax implications of lump sum withdrawals at retirement.
  • Assumes continuous employment and contributions — career breaks are not modelled.
  • Actual SASSA grant amounts are subject to annual adjustment.
