Insurance can feel like a bad deal in any year nothing goes wrong — you paid premiums and got nothing back. That feeling misunderstands what you're actually buying. You're not buying a payout; you're buying protection against a financial shock you can't afford to absorb on your own.
The mechanism: pooling risk across many people
Insurance works by pooling risk across a large group of people who each face the same type of uncertain, potentially large loss. Most people in the pool in any given year won't have a claim. The premiums from everyone in the pool fund the payouts for the smaller number who do. Because no individual can predict whether they'll be the one who needs it, but an insurer can predict fairly accurately what percentage of a large pool will, on average, over time — that predictability is what makes the whole system financially viable.
Why this is rational even if you "never claim"
The value of insurance isn't measured by whether you personally claim — it's measured by what would happen to your finances if the event occurred and you had no cover at all. A house fire, a death, a serious illness, a total-loss car accident: these are low-probability, high-severity events, exactly the kind of risk that's worth transferring to an insurer for a predictable premium, rather than carrying yourself and hoping it doesn't happen.
Not all cover is equally suited to this
Some risks are better self-insured (covered from your own savings) than formally insured — a risk that's small enough in financial impact that an emergency fund can absorb it without real hardship generally doesn't need a dedicated insurance product. The rest of this module works through the major categories of cover in South Africa — life and funeral cover (lesson 2), medical aid and hospital plans (lesson 3), home and car insurance (lesson 4) — and how to think about how much of each you actually need (lesson 5).
